Application Database Design

Sam Carpenter Gonimbo

Organizations today require a more stringent database design for their various data dependent applications. A properly designed application database facilitates data analysis, machine learning, security, and more efficient operations within the organization. The goal of this presentation is to give database professionals (database administrators and database developers) a set of tools for working with application developers to create high quality application databases. Developers have relied heavily on object relational mapping (ORM) frameworks to implement database integration and, in some cases, database design. Unfortunately, ORM frameworks often result in sub-optimal databases - both in performance and data integrity. Instead of relying entirely on ORM frameworks for database integration, application developers should work with database professionals to create application databases that meet the following design goals: - Data Integrity - Performance - Improved Application Functionality Here are some key application database features that support the design goals listed above: - Stored Procedure API - Retain Data "Deleted" By Application - Log All Updates With Original Values - Allow "Draft" Data - Surface History To Application User [DEMO] - The presentation will include a walk-through of the T-SQL for an example application database. In addition there will be a demonstration of an application built on top of the application database.
