SQL From an Application Perspective

Adam Martinek, Software Engineer Rackspace

Every application has to deal with a database to some extent. Every developer has to deal with slow queries or slow load times and it's often times a result of how we interact with our database. Let's talk about how these interactions happen from the application's perspective. Let's make your DBA's happier and give some better perspective surrounding your database access paradigm. This talk is going to be broken into two parts. The first part aims to set a baseline of knowledge surrounding general SQL concepts such as indexing and table joins. The second part will look at the different layers of ORM that your application might interact with and give a reasonable framework for a developers approach to think about those layers.

About Adam:
Adam is a Spokane native, and EWU Computer Science alumnus whose main passion is data storage. As a Database Developer on the Data and Semantics Engineering team he built out the storage and search functionality for Wolfram Alpha. Now he is working for Rackspace doing real time, high availability data pipelining on their monitoring team, where they monitor upwards of 200k servers.
